MARDI GRAS SPECIAL – Hot 8 Brass Band, Fly Away

It’s been a rough week here in New Zealand, with the Christchurch earthquake last Tuesday claiming 147 lives at last count and destroying the homes and livelihoods of many more.

But as devastating as it has been, it’s worth taking a little comfort from New Orleans, another city ravaged by natural disaster (and in their case appalling government mismanagement) who’ve managed to come through the other side with their spirit mostly unbroken.

Here are the Hot 8 Brass Band (BUY their album), playing the classic second line tune Fly Away, with the help of the Blind Boys of Alabama – playing Auckland Thursday 28 April; Wellington and Friday 29 April [UPDATE: news just in is that the Christchurch gig on Saturday 30 April has been cancelled].

(And for good measure, here they are rocking their version of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing, a rendition that never ceases to conjure whoops, hollers and religious fervour on dancefloors – just you suck it and see).
