Road trips chez nous are all about plugging in the iPod and setting it to play tracks / artists in alphabetical order rather than leaving it to shuffle which invariably throws out the same tracks again and again. This means we get to hear a whole bunch of nuggets we haven’t heard in ages, or indeed at all.
A recent roadie to Russell threw up all manner of rarely-heard niceness, including the glorious Hypnotic Tango by My Mine, a track I stumbled upon one Wednesday night at Nag Nag Nag in 2004, thanks to an early use of Shazam.
I’d first put Shazam to the test while working at Mixmag in 2002 and, according to my blog at the time, “found it severely lacking”, so – fast-forwarding to 2004 – I was astounded that it not only recognised this fairly obscure tune (on a very loud dancefloor), but also this even more obscure one.
A toast to you, Shazam – saviour of trainspotters everywhere.
